“That ICPA Qld lobbies the relevant Ministers and the Premier to provide an immediate increase to the Living Away From Home Allowance Scheme (LAFHAS), to better support rural and remote families with the rising costs of secondary schooling during the current cost-of-living crisis.”
The 2024 increase to the Living Away From Home Allowance Scheme (LAFHAS) has been significantly eroded by ongoing increases in the cost of living. The assistance provided through LAFHAS is falling further behind the true cost of educating geographically isolated children. As a result, many rural and remote families are being forced to consider relocating closer to secondary schools to access affordable education options for their children, negatively impacting the sustainability and viability of rural and remote communities.
